I have re-discovered the transformative power of a great morning routine. (I say “re-discover” because I used to follow one religiously but then got waylaid by life – as we sometimes do). But I have learned that the most significant part of my morning routine is identifying 3 affirmations to use during the day to keep me on course. I have encouraged my clients to use affirmations to shift their anxiety with really good effect. Today I offer you 10 affirmations to shift anxiety.

What Are Affirmations?

Affirmations are believable statements that we say to ourselves as often as possible and when the need arises.

While affirmations are positive in nature they are not simply a form of “positive thinking”. Affirmations are more like positive self talk that we use to keep us on track.

How Do Affirmations Work?

The power of the affirmation is that it begins to shift your beliefs and attitudes. Remember that your current beliefs and attitudes are, largely, a product of your programming. The programming that occurs through your early experiences and learning, as well as through relationships.

When we hear something often enough it eventually becomes our reality and our beliefs. Think back to childhood and what your parents used to tell you often. Perhaps they said you were “too loud”. Or maybe they called you “demanding”. Many parents call their kids “fussy eaters” for example. In some cases children are called “dumb”, “useless” and far worse.

You might notice that those repeated statements have become part of how you define yourself now. Perhaps you really do believe you’re demanding and other people find it difficult to meet your needs. Or maybe you think you’re stupid or useless.

Using affirmations on repeat is a way of undoing some of what we have been listening to for so long and changing the script.

And when you hear the new script often enough that can become the new perspective you have of yourself.

Applications of Affirmations

Affirmations have been used in Law of Attraction theory and manifestation. They are also commonly used in changing limiting beliefs around our own abilities.

I have found affirmations most useful in conjunction with my morning intentions. (Check back soon for an article on carving out a super transformational and easy to implement morning routine). Setting intentions for the day and then using affirmations to keep me on track has been so powerful in maintaining my sense of emotional wellbeing throughout the day.

Today we are going to discuss 10 affirmations to shift anxiety.

Next Steps

It is important to use affirmations to shift anxiety regularly. The key is to pick 1-3 affirmations that resonate and feel believable to you. Then use those as often as you can in situations that trigger your anxiety.

Remember: The more you say and hear them, the more believable they become.

Creating a morning routine that sets intentions for the day and handpicks affirmations to correspond with those intentions is the key to setting the day off to a great start. Our next post will cover morning routines in more detail.
